Successful Replacement of Imported 60Si2MnA High-Precision Spring Steel: Empowering High-End Machinery Enterprises to Break Through Industry Bottlenecks

Against the backdrop of accelerating evolution in global high-end manufacturing toward intelligence and high precision, the independence and controllability of core fundamental materials have become crucial for enterprises to break through technological blockades. Recently, a leading enterprise in the Asia-Pacific New Area specializing in the R&D and manufacturing of high-end engineering machinery transmission systems (hereinafter referred to as the "high-end machinery enterprise") achieved a major breakthrough in the localization of core components. The enterprise successfully introduced and applied 60Si2MnA high-precision spring steel (a high-performance product series belonging to carbon and alloy structural steels) produced by domestic special steel deep-processing bases. This achievement successfully realized the seamless replacement of a long-term imported high-strength spring steel grade from Europe (specifically DIN 1.7103 / 55SiCr6 imported precision spring steel strip), breaking long-standing foreign supply chain monopolies.

I. Breakthrough Pain Points: Import Dependency and Rigorous Performance Red Lines

As the core product of this high-end machinery enterprise, the critical elastic elements within its heavy-duty transmission mechanisms are subjected to high alternating stress, strong impacts, and frequent friction over long periods. In the past, to ensure product lifespan, the enterprise originally planned to procure 55SiCr6 (corresponding to the domestic 60Si2MnA modified high-precision series) special imported spring steel strips from a renowned European steel mill.

However, adopting imported materials not only brought prominent pain points such as long procurement cycles, high logistics costs, and supply chain vulnerability, but more critically, foreign suppliers offered extremely limited customized support for core parameters. The technical specifications for this spring steel material are exceptionally strict:

●Tensile Strength and Yield Limit: The tensile strength is required to reach the 1200 to 1400 MPa level, while possessing outstanding fatigue resistance performance.

●Dimensional Tolerance Precision: Due to high-precision stamping and forming requirements, the thickness tolerance must be strictly controlled within ±0.02mm, with a same-plate thickness difference of less than 0.03mm.

●Metallurgical Structure Requirements: The spheroidization rate must be maintained above 95%, and the depth of the surface decarburization layer and intergranular oxidation must be strictly controlled within 5μm; otherwise, micro-cracks are easily generated under extreme working conditions, leading to premature fatigue fracture.

II. Ingenious Tackling: Achieving Performance Superiority via Advanced Processes and Equipment

Facing these rigorous technical barriers, the domestic special steel deep-processing technical team forged ahead. Relying on a core equipment cluster including modern 20-high Sendzimir rolling mills, full-hydrogen bell-type annealing furnaces, and high-precision tension leveling machines, they carried out full-process process reconstruction and technical upgrading for the 60Si2MnA material:

●High-Precision Rolling Control: Utilizing an advanced AGC (Automatic Gauge Control) system, the thickness tolerance of this batch of 60Si2MnA spring steel was stably compressed within the ±0.02mm range, with various flatness indicators reaching international first-class levels.

●Deep Spheroidizing Annealing Process: Precision heat treatment was conducted through a bell-type annealing furnace under a full-hydrogen protective atmosphere (99.999% high-purity hydrogen), promoting the complete transformation of lamellar pearlite into spheroidized pearlite. The spheroidization rate was stably maintained above 95%, significantly enhancing the material's stamping formability and toughness after quenching.

●Microstructure and Surface Quality Optimization: By strictly controlling heating temperature uniformity (±5℃) and harmful inclusion content, surface decarburization and intergranular oxidation were effectively eliminated, ensuring that the steel strip exhibits superior tensile strength and elastic recovery capabilities after undergoing high-intensity stamping and complex stress cycles.

III. Replacement Effectiveness: A Win-Win for Cost Reduction, Efficiency Enhancement, and Supply Chain Security

Following rigorous bench tests and multiple rounds of fatigue life experiments, the domestic 60Si2MnA high-precision spring steel fully benchmarked and partially surpassed the originally planned imported counterpart across all core mechanical properties, tolerance indices, and service life.

●Cost and Cycle Optimization: The supply cycle was shortened from the original 6 to 12 months down to just a few weeks, and comprehensive procurement costs dropped substantially, effectively easing the enterprise's capital and inventory pressures.

●Empowering Enterprise Breakthrough: This successful replacement not only helped the high-end machinery enterprise smoothly complete the independent and controllable upgrade of its supply chain but also marked a new milestone for the application of high-precision spring steel in China's high-end engineering machinery sector.

Moving forward, with the large-scale mass production and process popularization of more high-performance carbon and alloy spring steel materials such as 60Si2MnA and 50CrV4, ALLOWORD will continuously empower more high-end manufacturing enterprises to break through global competitive bottlenecks with exceptional quality and comprehensive technical solutions.
