What is Tungsten Carbide?
Tungsten carbide, commonly referred to as cemented carbide, is a high-performance special alloy material that plays an irreplaceable role in modern industry. Known as the "teeth of modern industry", it is a sintered composite material composed of metal carbides and metallic binders, boasting exceptional physical and chemical properties that make it stand out from conventional materials.
At its core, tungsten carbide is mainly made up of two key components: tungsten carbide (WC) and metallic binders. Tungsten carbide serves as the primary hard phase, which is responsible for the material’s outstanding hardness and wear resistance—two of its most iconic characteristics. The metallic binders, typically cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), or iron (Fe), act as a "glue" to hold the tungsten carbide particles tightly together, while also endowing the material with necessary strength and toughness to avoid brittleness.

The production of tungsten carbide relies on powder metallurgy technology, which fuses tungsten carbide grains with binder metals to form a dense, uniform composite structure. The grain size of the tungsten carbide component is usually controlled between 0.2 and 10 micrometers; this fine-grained structure is the key to its excellent mechanical properties and processability, allowing it to be manufactured into various precision components.

Tungsten carbide’s superior performance is reflected in several aspects: its hardness can reach 89–95 HRA, far higher than that of ordinary steel; it maintains excellent wear resistance even under high temperature and high pressure; it combines high strength with good toughness, enabling it to withstand impacts and heavy loads without fracturing; it has strong heat resistance, retaining stability in high-temperature environments; and it exhibits good corrosion resistance, adapting to harsh working conditions such as acid and alkali environments.

As a versatile material, tungsten carbide is widely used in various industries, including hardware, machinery, mold manufacturing, cutting tools, chemical engineering, aerospace, and automotive manufacturing.
