Case Study: Mastering Ultra-Thin & Ultra-Narrow Slitting – Delivery of 200 Coils of 31603 (316L) Soft Precision Stainless Steel Strip
In cutting-edge manufacturing sectors such as precision electronic components, high-end medical devices, and chemical sealing bellows, even the slightest dimensional deviation in materials can lead to end-product failure. Recently, relying on our advanced precision cold-rolling and slitting lines, Alloword successfully overcame the dual technical challenge of "ultra-thin and ultra-narrow" processing, seamlessly delivering a total of 10 tonnes (200 coils) of 31603 soft-state precision stainless steel strip to the European market.
This order perfectly illustrates our comprehensive engineering capabilities, from the selection of specialised base materials to extreme dimensional processing.
I. Decoding the Extreme Inquiry: The Dual Test of 0.075mm Thickness and 6.35mm Width
This order originated from a precision component manufacturer with extremely stringent requirements for material purity and dimensions. The technical specifications provided by the client were concise but riddled with processing difficulties:
-
Material Specification: 31603 (i.e., 316L Ultra-Low Carbon Stainless Steel). Renowned for its exceptional resistance to intergranular corrosion, maintaining stable mechanical properties at such a minimal thickness demands exceptionally high smelting purity.
-
Extreme Dimensions: 0.075mm Thickness, 6.35mm Width. A thickness of 0.075mm firmly enters the territory of "stainless steel foil". Meanwhile, the ultra-narrow width of 6.35mm is highly susceptible to camber (lateral bowing) or edge burrs during the slitting process.
-
Physical Condition: Soft (Fully Annealed). The material must possess outstanding ductility and deep-drawing properties to facilitate the client's subsequent stamping and forming processes.
-
Coiling Challenge: 50 kg per Coil. For an ultra-thin steel strip only 6.35mm wide, a 50 kg weight equates to an extraordinarily long single coil. Without precise tension control during recoiling, issues such as telescoping, staggered layers, or edge damage are highly likely to occur.
II. Empowered by Hardcore Machinery: Achieving Micron-Level Precision Control
Confronted with these four major technical pain points, Alloword's engineering team rapidly mobilised our core state-of-the-art equipment and formulated a rigorous production schedule.
1. 20-High Sendzimir Mill: Tackling Ultra-Thin Rolling Standard cold-rolling mills cannot handle a reduction down to 0.075mm. We deployed a 20-high Sendzimir precision cold-rolling mill equipped with a highly accurate AGC (Automatic Gauge Control) system. Through multi-pass, micro-reduction rolling, we not only locked the thickness tolerance within an extremely narrow band but also guaranteed excellent surface flatness and finish.
2. Continuous Bright Annealing: Securing a Pristine "Soft State" To achieve the client's required soft state whilst ensuring the surface of the 0.075mm ultra-thin foil remained unoxidised, we conducted the heat treatment in a continuous bright annealing furnace flooded with protective gas. The precise control of furnace temperature and line speed allowed the grain structure within the 31603 to undergo full and uniform recrystallisation. This perfectly relieved internal stresses, endowing the material with superb deep-drawing ductility.
3. Precision Slitting Line: Ensuring Burr-Free Edges To accommodate the extreme 6.35mm width, we installed bespoke tungsten carbide circular knives and precisely adjusted the blade clearance and overlap. The high-precision slitting line, combined with a micro-tension control system, ensured smooth, burr-free edges and tightly controlled the straightness of the material, entirely eliminating the risk of camber.
III. Ultimate Coiling and Protection: Guaranteeing Every Metre Remains Intact
For an ultra-thin steel strip measuring just 6.35mm wide and weighing 50 kg per coil, conventional ribbon winding (pancake coiling) would easily collapse. Our production line utilised high-precision oscillated winding (traverse winding) technology. By employing precise servo motors to control the traverse pitch and maintain constant tension, we ensured all 200 coils featured perfectly flush faces and tightly wound profiles.
During the packaging phase, acknowledging the extreme fragility of the 0.075mm foil, we adopted a suspended packaging method. The coils were wrapped internally in VCI (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor) anti-rust paper, supported by high-strength plastic cores, and encased in bespoke wooden export crates. This guaranteed that the 10 tonnes of precision material would be completely protected from physical compression and moisture during transit.
IV. Conclusion
The successful delivery of 0.075mm x 6.35mm 31603 soft stainless steel strip is more than just a set of dimensional parameters; it is a testament to Alloword's technical prowess in the high-end metal rolling sector. No matter how demanding the tolerance requirements or how specialised the physical properties you need, our advanced machinery and highly experienced engineering team are fully equipped to provide the most reliable bespoke metal supply solutions.
